A lucky find when we were in the Haymarket area looking for lunch. Essentially a French cafe with very reasonable lunch menu. Interesting looking wine (tho wine at lunch makes me sleepy so I abstained). Goats cheese salad and the tarts were also pronounced excellent. Cheap and cheerful – less than £8 for lunch. Will try again in the evening sometime.

La Garrigue is a French restaurant in Edinburgh which specialises in Languedoc cuisine. I’ve been there a few times but not for a while and I had forgotten how good it is. I went with a group of speakers from a conference that I was involved in and everyone was incredibly positive about it. I started with Roquefort souffle with pear salad, followed by rabbit stuffed with spinach and black pudding. I don’t normally have desserts but they had lemon tart and I’m a sucker for this. With wine (Chateau Grande Cassagne, an excellent red), it worked out about £40 each. Friendly staff and good service.  IMHO, the best French restaurant in Edinburgh.
