Ate in various places during a short holiday in Orkney but this was the only memorable meal. The Foveran is just outside Kirkwall and the dining room looks over to Hoy. I started with fried orkney cheese – a local speciality which was enjoyable but not, perhaps, something I’d want to repeat. This was followed by wonderful slow-cooked mutton with potatoes. Mutton is hard to get in most places but has more flavour than lamb. Lovely setting and excellent food. About £33 each with a reasonable bottle of Sauv. Blanc and some dark Orkney beer.
Some say the Foveran is the best food in Orkney, others that The Creel in St Margaret’s Hope is better. It was fully booked when we tried to get in so I can’t comment.
